Exchange for Google Calendar and Contacts on the iPhone Thoughts
So in a leap of faith, I moved off of mail2web and onto the google exchange server. The hope is that gmail will go onto their exchange server soon enough.
Here are my experiences, if you ever choose to make the same move:
1. As stated, it wipes all your contacts and calendars clean
2. Backing up your contacts doesn’t help. You still lose all the pictures/ring tones you’ve assigned to the contacts.
3. Syncing your google contacts to your address book creates a billion new contacts in your address book (I’ve griped about this before). I knew this was going to happen so I backed up my address book before doing the sync.
a. What I did was I deleted all my contacts in google contacts (select all -> delete)
b. Downloaded software called A to G which converts the address book database into csv files for Google Contacts to read
c. Load in my original address book via csv file load
d. Watch it magically come over OTA to your phone…
4. Your iCal calendar doesn’t sync over to the iPhone anymore, unless you have your iCal sync to google calendar on your desktop. (I did a manual import of the .ics file into Google calendar, and decided to use google calendar instead)
5. I have my gmail on the half hour clock and I feel pretty OK about it. It keeps me sane. When I first got the iphone, the push thing was really important but now it’s not as important. I think it is handy to be able to add events straight from the gmail interface, and contacts too.
All in all, I think it is a great move. If they added gmail exchange, I’d probably pay a nominal fee for it a year - $20 a year maybe?
